Learning how to grow herbs from seeds is easy, fun and adds so much flavor to your everyday meals. At the local nurseries a single herb plant alone can cost up to $3.00 each so growing your herbs from seeds is less expensive especially if you are growing a lot of plants.  I use a lot of herbs for my soups and everyday cooking so I like to dry my own herbs as there is no comparison to the flavor of your own dried herbs to use throughout the winter.

You can start most herbs from seed, some are easy to grow and are fast growers while others can be a bit of a challenge and take a bit longer to grow.  If this is your first time growing herbs from seeds then I would recommend sticking to the easier herbs to grow.

You can grow your selected herbs in pots and containers on your deck for handy pickings or in your greenhouse and in raised beds if you have them.

You can place your seeds directly into the soil where you plan to grow your herbs but you will have better success if you start your herbs seeds indoors a few weeks before re-potting them outside. This is the method I will be explaining to you. It works very well for me.

When To Plant Herb Seeds Indoors

You generally want to start your herbs seeds indoors about 6 weeks before you plan to place them outside permanently. You will want to check your area for the last frost date. This will give your seeds a good start to germinating and a few weeks of growth. I have a short growing season where I live so it’s nice to have a good head start with my herbs.  Be sure to read the back information of all your seed packages just to make sure.  There are some herb seeds that do take a long time to germinate like Rosemary which can take up to 28 days to germinate.

What Soil To Use When Growing Herbs From Seed

You will want to purchase soil that is made for seedlings as it is rich in nutrients and doesn’t contain little bits of sticks or other substances.  You will see that the soil made for seedlings is quite fine with no clumps.  If you find that the soil is dry when you have opened the bag you will want to fill a large bucket with the soil and add some water just to moisten it.

Containers For Growing Herbs From seeds

You can use any container for starting herbs from seeds as long as it is 3 – 4 inches deep and has some drainage holes to allow extra water to drain out.  I like to reuse my seedling trays from previous years of buying seedlings or plants.

How To Grow Herbs From Seeds

You will need to gather your choice of herb seeds, small containers, seedling soil and some water.

  1. Fill your containers almost to the top with your moistened seedling soil.
  2. Sprinkle some of your selected herb seeds over the top of the dirt.  With the smaller herb seeds it will be hard to just drop a couple in so I usually end up sprinkling a few in my seedling container and as they grow will thin them out.  If your herb seeds are larger then you can just place one or 2 into the container depending on the width of the container.
  3. Cover the herb seeds with a bit more soil.  Most herb seeds say to sow 1 cm deep so that is about the amount of dirt you want to cover them with.
  4. Mist or water the whole area of the herb container.
  5. You can place some plastic over your seedling containers or if you have a dome like container you can place the clear lid over them to help keep the heat and moisture in for a faster germination.
